1. All I Wanna Do Sheryl Crow
I was on the ZCMI Teen Board during our junior year. Our first fashion show was in the late summer at the Capitol Theater, and one of the catwalk songs was this lovely tune. Anytime I hear it, I remember all of the rehearsals, the grunge fashion, and braiding my hair into a Wednesday Addams style as that is the look the directors wanted.
2. Mysterious Ways U2
I loved U2 in high school. I remember wearing the Achtung Baby t-shirt to school on a regular basis. I wish I still had it.
3. Add It Up Violent Femmes
Annie Burrows and I decided to take Will Beesley to Junior Prom when we are seniors. We thought it would be funny to find some crazy dresses and promenade down the Capitol stairs. It took some cajoling to get Will, but we ended up convincing him. On the drive up to the Capitol, I had Violent Femmes playing in the car, and this song came on, and I remember after the line, “Why can’t I get just one kiss?” Will said, “It just goes downhill from here.” We all laughed and I recall singing the chorus altogether. I caught up with Will last year, and we reminisced about this dance. Good memories!
4. Smells Like Teen Spirit Nirvana
I still remember when they announced Kurt Cobain’s suicide on Channel One during Algebra II.
5. Java Jive Manhattan Transfer
I had the alto solo for a few jazz choir performances, and it’s still one of my favorite songs to sing. It’s been ages since I last sang it, but I bet I could still bust it out.
6. Come Out & Play The Offspring
I’ll will never forget how Kim Cottrell would change the line Come Out & Play’s chorus from “Take him out” to “Drink your milk.” Any time the song comes on the radio, it always makes me smile and think of high school and how Kim made a song about gangster violence into something totally different.
