Alta boys’ and girls’ soccer coach Lee Mitchell will be awarded an ESPY for the National Coach of the Year, The Tribune confirmed on Saturday.
John Cena is set to host the 2016 ESPYs on ABC on July 13 at 6 p.m. from the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles. The award show commemorates the past year in sports achievements.
“It’s a recognition, I think, for the whole program, honestly, and for Utah, and what Utah has been able to do in soccer,” Mitchell said. “… It’s pretty amazing. I don’t know quite what to think.”
Mitchell started coaching the Hawks’ boys’ program in 1983 and later took over the girls’ program when the sport was sanctioned in 1989. He was honored as the National Coach of the Year in boys’ soccer by the National Federation of State High School Associations in 2014, but he quickly credits his players for the accomplishments.
“It’s been the kids that have done it, not me,” Mitchell said.
Mitchell has guided the Hawks to 13 total state championships, winning eight in girls’ and five in boys’ soccer.
“I love the kids,” Mitchell said. “It’s been my life for a long time.”
