Derald was born in Ontario, Oregon on March 12, 1948. In 1953 the family moved to Utah. Derald attended Cyprus High School. He received his Bachelors in English at Utah State University, where he was the editor of the literary magazine. He received his Master’s Degree from the University of Utah. After graduation, Derald started his teaching profession at Butler Junior High. He helped open Alta High School, where he taught English and was the yearbook adviser for 25 years. He received many awards and tributes, the best being the admiration and respect of his students. Derald was an avid reader, book collector, animal lover, an expert bridge player, and had a wry sense of humor.

Derald is survived by his mother Betty, brother Steve (Shauna), niece Alicia, and his partner of 30 years, Jim Tarr.

He was preceded in death by his father Harvey.

An informal celebration of Derald’s life will be held at Lexington Village Condominiums 4135 South 635 East – at Old Farm Way. 12:00 Wednesday February 12th. Please bring your fondest memories and stories to share. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Utah Humane Society or the Bulldog Club of Utah Rescue.
